further along the Pokfulam Road, and after demolishing the temporary buildings which now lie at the back of the University quadrangle to extend the main University building

by adding 3 sides of an inner quadrangle. The e stimates for these projects amount to $650,000 and $500,000 respectively.

It is further e stimated that a sum of $70,000 is required

for the initial furnishing and equipping of the new block

and that an annual sum of $25,000 would be required for the

maintenance and upkeep of the new buildings. Thus a capital

sum of $1,220,000 is required or roughly £12 2,500, though here again I would remind you that the buildings would have to be paid for in Hong Kong dollars. Both buildings could probably be completed in 2 years. About $5 lakhs could be spent in the first year. In the second year it would be necessary to find the balance, viz., $62 lakhs the sum of $70,000 required for initial furnishing and equipping. The annual sum required for the upkeep would not be required

until the buildings were completed.

Useful work is now being done in this University

in connexion with the study of law and there is considerable

enthusiasm among the s tudents for this branch of work. We are anxious to inaugurate the comparative study of British and Roman and Chinese law. Your deputation will appreciate

what a vast field of research in Chinese law lies inviting

investigation. In order to start on this work all that will be necessary for the present is to convert the present Readership in Law and Folitics into a Professorship and to add a Lectureship. This will involve an annual outlay of $16,000 or about £1,600. But here again the salaries will

have to be paid in Hong Kong dollars.
