In addition, between 1922 and 1925, to these annual sums a non-recurring grant of £569,400 was made by the Government to provide retrospective superannuation bene. fit for members of the staffs.

In 1925 there was an addition to the grants of £257,430 which was used in part to provide salary improvements for existing members of the staffs.

Speaking at University College, London, in June 1927, the Rt. Hon. H.A.L. Fisher said, "Taking the fifty institutions comprised in the survey of the University Grants Committee, we find that the proportion of Government grant to total income is now 39.5%, while the proportion of endowments to total income is only 10.7, the remainder being furnished by fees and grants from Local Authorities".
