that the project included a class for teaching Cantonese.

The re

have been no protests or comments, but equally there have been no

subscriptions. It is true that we did not definitely ask for any.

If it is thought that to include the class in the scheme for the

school would endanger the collection of money for the school, then

perhaps Government would guarantee the cost of the scheme for a

period of say five years, but I am including in the scheme the

necessary provision for the Cantonese Class.

If we cannot collect the necessary funds and have to

resort at the close of this year to the previous arrangement under

which the only Chinese teaching provided in the University is

teaching in the Arts Faculty up to the Intermediate stage, then

it will, I think, have to be seriously considered whether the

University is an institution which has any claim to maintain a

general Chinese class, though the University would doubtless be

willing to continue to receive the cadets and to continue to have

in the University a class for their instruction, provided the ex-

penses of the class were found by Government. That I mean is that

oven though the University were faced by lack of funds practically

to ignore Chinese as a subject of study, Government might still

hold that there were advantages in sending the cadets to the Uni-

versity which this noglcct of Chinesc did not altogether vitiate.

On the other hand if the University makes practically no provision

for the teaching of Chinese to Chinese students, it would perhaps

be a little anomalous for it to offer Chinosc instruction to

forcignors generally.

Now as to the staff. I am assuming that from the Govern-

ment Vernacular Middle School and cl scwhere there will be a rogular

supply of students to the proposcd Chinese School. I am told that

the annual supply will be not less than five and that it may be

At any rate there will be, after the schome has been running
