In view of the fact that these
appointments are part of the re-organisation of
this Department, and are held by men of consider-
able Seniority, we bag Your Lordship to rule that
they are entitled to a higher acɛle of salary than
the Surveyors.
We would again emphasize the point
raised in our original letter forwarded to the
Honourable Harbour Master, wherein we drew
attention to the fact that there is only one
senior post for which an assistant surveyor is
eligible, namely, that of Government Marine
Surveyor, and this with a staff of fourteen
results in the majority having no opportunity
for advancement beyond their present office.
We would invite Your Lordship's
attention to an examination of the Commission's
proposed scale of Salaries, in their effect upon
our pensions, and to humbly submit that the
comparatively poor allowance for which Surveyors
will be eligible upon retirement emphasizes in a
marked degree our claim for special consideration.
A comparison is given below.
(a) The average age of Public Works Engineers
upon joining the 3ervice to the year 1928 is
28.1 years.
(b) For European Schoolmasters this is 28.6 years. (c) For Assistant Government Marine Surveyors is
33.4 years.
On a retiring age of 55 years and the salaries
based on the Commission's recommendations it is
