I realize that it has no direct bearing upon the
recommendations made in the Salaries Commission Report.
(10) Turning to the recommendations made by
the Salaries Commission for the Junior Clerical Staff merely
for the purpose of comparison with the scale of pay enjoyed
by clerks in commercial employ the following details in
regard to the scale of remuneration paid by the Union
Insurance Society of Canton, Ltd., to Chinese, Portugese,
Eurasian clerks may be helpful.
Young men from 17 to 21 years of age are engaged
at $40 a month for the first six months and $50 for the
second six months.
Thereafter they receive usually a
yearly increase according to their merits. I state certain
examples. In all these cases the men at date have Provident
Fund Agreements.
F.R. joined the Society on the 1st March 1925 at 16
years of age at a salary of $40 per mensem. On the 1st
January 1930 his salary was increased from $90 to $100 per
mensem.
G.S.L. joined the Society's service at 18 years of
age on the 1st December 1926 at $40 per mensem. He is at
present drawing $80 per mensem.
C.M.da S. joined the Society on the 1st February 1927
at 21 years of age at a salary of $60 per mensem.
now receiving 90 per mensem.
He is
M.F. joined the Society on the 15th July 1923 at the
age of 25 at $45 per mensem. He is now receiving $160 per
mensem. Since joining the Society he has improved very
much in shorthand and typing.
J.C.G. joined the Society on the 1st May 1913 at the
age of 25 and is at present in receipt of a salary of $350
per mensem.
L.A.0. joined the Society on the 1st August 1916.
He is at present in receipt of a salary of $275 per mensem.
