or British-protected subjects of Chinese race; and I
strongly urge that His Majesty's Government should, in the
interests of Malaya, where it is believed next year's
census will show more than half the total population to be
of Chinese race, endeavour to obtain equally favourable
treatment in China for Chinese whom under British law we
claim as our subjects.
