own family and was allowed to take away with her all

her clothing.

On the 26th August last, a little over one

· month after she left Hong Kong, the girl returned to

Mrs, Kan's house accompanied by an amah. On being

questioned why she returned to Hong Kong she gave the

reason that she couldn't get work to do in the country.

As Mrs. Kan could not very well turn a young girl out

of doors, she was allowed to remain on sufferance.

During her stay at Mrs. Kan's house, i.e., between the

dates of 26th August and 23rd November last, the girl

made use of the house as a place of convenience and at

the expense of Mrs..Kan's kindness. She was seen lately

to be wearing a gold ring on one of her fingers giving

an appearance that she was engaged to be married, but

she did not say a word to Mrs. Kan about her doings

or of her engagement to be married. The girl knew

perfectly well that Mrs. Kan had absolutely no control

over her actions. After her interview with Mr. North

on the 22nd ultima she left Mrs. Kan's house the very

next day and has not been heard of since. Probably she

has married!

The second case. The late Mrs. Kan Hung Chiu bought a

young girl 10 years ago named "Tsoi Ling". This girl is

now 17years of age according to Chinese reckoning, i.e., between 15 and 16 according to English reckoning. After

several months enquiries Mr. Kan succeeded in finding her father who came to Hong Kong on the 6th May last.

Mr. Kan handed back to her father the purchase deed and

requested him to take his daughter back. The girl's

father was quite willing to do so. Mr. Kan paid the father $15.00 for travelling expenses also $10.00 to the girl who was also allowed to take away with her all her

clothing
