he would not wish any encouragement given to their views on the subject. In these circumstances, His
Lordship proposes in reply to their letter while
alluding to Mr Henderson's promise to add that
he does not think that it would be desirable in
present circumstances to call the attention of
the League to the influence which Chinese customs
have on the difficulties experienced by the Hong Kong Government.
