Upon receipt of your confidential despatch to

me, dated the 10th October, 1929, forwarding copies of

correspondence between Sir Miles Iampson and the Foreign

Office, on the subject of the carriage of contraband by

British ships, I caused a confidential letter, of which

I enclose a copy, dated the 11th December, 1929, to be

addressed to the representatives in this Colony of Messrs.

Jardine, latheson & Company, Limited, Messrs. Butterfield

& Swire, and to the Managers of the Hong Kong, Canton and

Macao Steamboat Company, and of the Douglas Steamship

I enclose the replies received from the

Honourable Ir. B.D.F. Beith, dated the 7th January, 1930,

from the Hong Kong, Canton Macao Steamboat Company, dated

the 18th December, 1929, from the General Managers of the

Douglas Steamship Company, dated the 15th January, 1930,

and from Mr.T.H.R. Shaw of lessrs. Butterfield & Swire,

dated the 17th January, 1930.
