CANTON GOVERNOR.
Visits Hongkong to Bid
H. E. Farewell.
GOVT. HOUSE PARTY.
General Chan Ming-shu, Civil Governor of Kwangtung, accom- panied by Madame Chan and party, arrived at Kowloon by special train soon after 11 o'clock yester- day morning, on a visit to bid farewell to H.E. the Governor of Hongkong, and also to participate in the launching of the new steamer Tsinan at Taikoo Dock- yard, reported elsewhere.
On arrival, the party was met by Capt. Sillitoe, A.D.C., and sub- sequently General Chan was enter- tained to tiffin at the Pensinsula Hotel by Messrs. Butterfield and Swire. At 2 p.m., General Chan visited Government House, where he had a brief chat with H.E. the Governor before the latter attend- ed the meeting of the Legislative Council.
Later in the afternoon, General Chan proceeded to Taikoo for the launching ceremony, being accompanied by members of his party, in charge of Mr. Mok Kon- sang, Messrs. Butterfield and Swire's compradore.
Subsequently, the Canton visi- tors returned to Government House, where a big party
was
given last night at which leading' members of the Chinese
com-
munity were present. There were in all, about 80 guests.
The Governor's Toast.
His Excellency the Governor, in proposing the toast of the King and the Republic of China, at last night's banquet, said:
"General Chan Ming-shu, Your Ex- cellencies, ladies and gentlemen.-I I ask you to drink with me to the health of His Majesty the King; and, in token of the friendship unit- ing our two countries, I propose to you at the same time the toast of: the prosperity and welfare of the Republic of China. May the spirit. of harmony, goodwill and mutual co-operation between Canton and Hongkong grow stronger from day to day!

The members of General Chan's party comprised the Mayor of Can- ton, Mr. Lam Wan-koi, who has now taken over foreign affairs under the new system instituted on January 1st; Mr. C. Y. Yeung, adviser to the Mayor on foreign affairs, and Mrs. Yeung; General Au Yeung-kui, Chief of Police, and Mrs. Au Yeung; Mrs. Chan Chak; Captain Lieu Yung-kao and Captain Y. W. Liu, Naval Staff Offi- cers, and Engineer Commander Fung.
Amongst others who were on the station platform to welcome the visitors were the Hon. Dr. R. H. Kotewall, the Hon. Dr. S. W. T'so, Mr. Woo Hay-tong, and Mr. Chau Min-shu.

The party returned to Canton last night by boat, which specially held back for one hour.
