was wont to ply between Canton and Shekki was blown up by mines in the waters of Pak Fa. The junk had two hundred passengers on board of whom ten were drowned and the rest robbed of their belongings and in some cases kidnapped. On the same day another junk was shot at by pirates in the same region and similar attacks have occurred elsewhere.

8. Although the unrest in China has a depressing effect on the trade of Hong Kong, conditions of law and order in the colony continue to be satisfactory. 1st passed off very quietly. Communistic agitation, though attempted in a very limited section of the local Chinese press, appears to meet with little response, and labour troubles have been happily absent.
