The following subjects were taken up with
His Excellency Sir Cecil Clementi, who states that Hong Kong
is exceedingly interested in them:
(1) The Rehabilitation of the Canton Kowloon line.
This rehabilitation will go so far as to rake it a first class railway in order to compete successfully with river boats; and, s a first step, Hongkong will
provide coaches for the line which should be eventually taken over by the Chinese Gection. Concerning the supply the previons of coaches, His Excellency has already secured the consent
This is a
of the Secretary of Colonies as in the previous case of the supply of three locomotives. His Excellency is
interested in our rehabilitation plan of the Canton Kowloon Railway, and asks for a copy of the same (which was forwarded accordingly after the conference).
(2). The Completion of the Canton Hankow line.
His Excellency agrees with me that this scheme
will serve to open a new trade route for the Colony and tend to stabilize the conditions of that section of the
country south of theYangtse for the mutual benefits of both parties.
(3). The Building of a loop Tine to connect the
Canton Hankow and the Canton Kowloon Railways. His Excellency Sir Clementi readily sees the "Canton psychology", and our political difficulty in connection with this subject. His E cellency specially
