I venture to draw your special

attention to the last paragraph of my confidential

despatch (4) of the 31st May, 1929, recommending that

periodical conferences should be held in Hong Kong

between the principal local British authorities

concerned with China, namely, His lajesty's Kinister

at Feking, the Naval Commander-in-Chief, the General

Officer, China Command, and the Governor of Hong Kong.

You have, in the fifth paragraph of your secret

despatch to me, dated the 11th September, 1929,

informed me that the matter is receiving consideration

and that you hope to address me further on this point

in the near future.

I now enclose for your personal

information a copy of a letter written to me by Sir

Miles Lampson, dated the 4th Cctober, 1929, which

reached me upon my return from Manila on the 28th

October, and of the reply, dated the 1st November,

1929, which I have sent to Sir Miles.

You will notice that, in addition

to the proposed conference between the Governor, the

Finister, the Admiral and the General, it is also
