With reference to the case, of a Chinese widow who was fined £10 in the Colony of Hongkong, on Tuesday, July 23rd, inst. with the option of two month's imprisonment, for "shamefully overworking" a 15-years-old Mui Tsai (girl slave) whom she bought five years ago, would you very kindly inform me upon the following points. (The case was reported in the Daily Mail of July 25th, inst.)

I Did the sale of the said girl take place in the Colony?
ΙΙ What were the terms of the deed under which she was sold?
III Was the knitting, factory to which she was sent in the

If in the territory of Great Britain, were the wages paid
to the girl in accordance with the law governing the
wages paid in the Colony?
V Were the hours of work in the said factory in accordance
with the factory laws of Hong Kong?
VI Was the sale of the girl, if it took place in Hong Kong
a flagrant breach of the British law governing the
Colony?
VII Was the penalty imposed upon the widow so imposed on
account of her treatment of the girl, or on account of her
purchase of her?
