8.

Incident related by Commander Hazlewood.

The matter was investigated by the police, who

found the mui tsai in question was not being ill- treated, but was screaming from temper, as children

do everywhere. (She had been refused permission to go out with her adoption parents)

9.

"Resale".

Traffic in mui tsai is quite illegal and the Government has no evidence that any organised

traffic is carried on underground.

10.

"Sale for prostitution".

As already stated there is no evidence of any large numbers of mui tsai becoming prostitutes, and steps are taken to see that prostitutes in licensed brothels in Hong Kong are there voluntarily

and not under pressure.

11.

Age of inmates of brothels.

No girl is admitted to a licenced brothel unless the Secretary for Chinese Affairs is satisfied she is 19 or over (the marriageable age being 16 or 17) Doubtful cases are referred to a committee of

The Chinese, hich super social & charitable with geall, among respectable Chinese gentlemen and where doubt remains,

A

admission is refused. A system of inspection secures

that no girls under age are allowed in brothels.

12.

"White slave" traffic from Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong Government is as anxious as any other

civilised Government to stop this. It has no evidence

of the truth of the statements in the article but

would be glad to be supplied with specific facts in support of them and to take action on them.
