It will be seen that the return journey was not
only overland but over several mountain ranges, and that
a considerable risk attended the choice of this route
for a seaplane. At a recent dinner party I was fortunate
enough to sit between these two young officers and I was
impressed by their modesty about their owm considerable
achievements and their keeness about everything connected
with aviation. They received their aeronautical training
in the United States.
5. Mr. Vaughan-Fowler's memorandum gives details of
a biplane which, apart from the engine, has been entirely
constructed by the staff of the Canton Aviation Department,
without foreign assistance.

Hitherto the machines used in Canton have all been
of French or American manufacture, but now, thanks largely
to Mr. Vaughan-Fowler's efforts and his friendship with the
officials of the Aviation Department, the latter have de-
cided to give British planes a trial. They first wished
to purchase "Moth" aeroplanes for which Arnhold & Company
