which is thought quite possible, no serious
inconvenience is likely to arise on the Island as
sufficient storage capacity exists to cover such
a period.
4. We have received a further letter from
Mr. Fairley wherein he refers to the conference held
at the Colonial Office on the 19th September when it
was stated that it was not possible to obtain further
supplies of water from the Island. In this
connection Mr. Fairley directs attention to a paper
contributed by the late Mr. Jaffe to the Institution
of Civil Engineers in 1918 entitled "Hong Kong Water
Works, Low Level Reservoirs and Contigent Works for
Pumping Supply" In this paper it is suggested that
two catchment areas of a total area of 1,107 acres
existed from which additional water might be obtained.
It is, of course, possible that these areas have since
been investigated and have been found unsuitable.
