My Lord,

In continuation of my Secret despatch of

the 19th of July, 1929, I have the honour to inform

Your Lordship that the political situation in

South China has undergone little change during the

past month. There are, it is true, indications of

an undercurrent of intrigue among the Military

Commanders of Kwangtung province; but it is too

early for surmise as to the direction in which this

is setting.

The attack upon Yunnanfu referred to in

paragraph 2 of my despatch of the 19th of July, 1929,

failed; but a number of Kwangsi commanders, including

Generals Wong Shiu-hung and Pai Chung-hsi are believed

still to be in or near Haiphong awaiting an opportunity

to return to their native province or to enter

Yunnan.

I may add with reference to paragraph 4

and enclosure No.1 in my secret despatch of the 19th

of July that Marshal Li Tsung-jên and General Tsui
