despatch of 18th January, it has come to my knowledge that the Hunanese General Tang Shang-chin is at the present time living in Hong Kong. This fact, which is certainly true, has caused me very much surprise, and I am doing my best to ascertain for what purpose General Tang is here. Marshal 's entourage were unaware of the fact and looked somewhat startled when

I communicated it to the. I can only conjecture that General T'ang's mission is to spy out the real military strength of the Kwangsi group; and it is interesting that he should have come South without Marshal Li's knowledge.

5. I hope to see more of Harshal Li soon, and I shall probably pay him an unofficial visit in Canton before he next returns to Nanking.

Meanwhile

I am glad of his presence in the Liang Kwang provinces,

as it makes for stability in Southern China. He and

I are on very friendly terms personally.

6. Larshal Li and his Starf leit Kowloon for

Canton by the 2.30 p.m. train.

7. The Chinese characters for the names in this despatch are given on a separate sheet.

I have the honour to be,

Sir,

Your most obedient, humble servant,

Governor, Co.
