Sir,
In continuation of my secret despatch of
18th January, 1 have the honour to inform you that
Marshal Li Chai-sum arrived in Hong Kong this morning
by steamer from Shanghai. 1 sent my Aide-de-camp on
board to meet him and invited him to lunch with me.
He accepted and came with his personal staff, General
Chan Hing-wan and Mr. Tang Ka-yin; and there came to
meet him from canton Mr. Chu thao-hsin, the Commissioner
for Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Li Man-yan, a much trusted
Private Secretary. I also invited to the lunch party
Sir Shouson Chow and ur. Kotewall, the Chinese members
of the Legislative Council, Mr. North, the Secretary
for Chinese Affairs, and mr. Kong Yi-sun, who is a
personal friend of Marshal Li and who is, as you are
aware from other despatches of mine, now the Superint-
endent of the Chinese Telegraph Office in Hong Kong.
2. Marshal Li seemed to be in very good
spirits and glad to be back again in South China.
told me that his principal object in returning was to
spend Chinese New Year with his family and to attend at
