5. The Canton Seamen's Union is still endeavouring to extend its operations throughout the inland waters
of the province, but has met with strong opposition
from two quarters at least; an attempt to secure control
of the crews of junks engaged in the salt traffic has
so far been successfully resisted by the salt merchants,
and in the region of the West liver the Seamen's Union
has met, in the West River Seamen's Union, a rival
as unscrupulous as itself.
6. An interesting item of local news is the opening to motor traffic of a road between Nim Shan in the Bias Bay area and Ping Shan about ten miles inland in the direction of Wai chow. There is now a body of
500 regulars stationed at Nim Shan and some activity has recently been shown in dealing with pirate gangs in the neighbourhood, who are keeping quiet in
consequence.
