In continuation of my secret despatch,
dated 18th April, I have the honour to inform you
that news has reached me today from a very reliable source, throwing light on the present political
situation in South China.
I am told that Marshal
Chiang Kai-shek has instructed Cheung Fat-fui, the
Commander of the 4th Army, and Ho Chien, the
Commander of the troops in Hunan to attack and
capture Kwangsi province at latest by the 10th May, and that he has also given positive orders to the
Canton Government to join in the attack upon Kwangsi,
his object being to make a clean sweep, if possible, of his Kwangsi opponents before he tries conclusions with Marshal Feng Yu-hsiang.
2. These orders have placed the Canton
Government in a position of great difficulty.
The
leader of the Canton Government, General Chan Ming-shu
is at present convalescing in the Government Civil Hospital at Hong Kong, from which he is due for
discharge next week. General Ch'an Ming-shu has,
however,
