for a period of five years. Subsequently the Mission found

that the building was unsuitable for their purpose and that

many structural alterations were necessary. Permission to

let the building to the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes

was accordingly requested. This request Goverment, however,

felt compelled to refuse until the necessary structural

alterations had been made. The Mission in reply stated that

they could not afford to make the alterations and proposed

that the building should be demolished.

On the recommendation, however, of the Director

of Public Works it was decided that the building should be

leased to a Chinese contractor for storage purposes on a 6

monthly tenancy, and the surrender of the property by the Mission was duly completed in November, 1926.

It is now proposed to sell the area by private

treaty to Messrs. H. Ruttonjee and Son at a premium of $5 per

foot, on the conditions of which copies are enclosed.

premium recommended is high, but in view of the fact that the

position is peculiarly suitable for the purpose for which it is required, I am of the opinion that the sale by private treaty at this premium is justified.

I should add that this proposal includes

arrangements for an ultimate widening of Canton Road, upon

which this building stands.
