assist in general confidential Secretarial work
when not engaged in taking down and transcribing
shorthand notes.
I therefore, ask your covering authority
for this additional appointment and your sanction
For making the necessary provision in the
Estimates for 1929.

The extra cost of those proposals during
1928 would be $400 on account of Miss Thornhill,
and a sum of $1,400 in respect of the salary of an
additional European lady Stenographer from 1st June,
until the end of the year. To meet this expense
there are savings on the salary of the Chief Clork
amounting to $3,600. Supplementary supply in aid
of this vote will, however, be required to provide
for the pay of the Acting Colonial Secretary during
my absence on full pay leave.

As regards the officers who are classified
under the heading Senior Clerical and Accounting Staff
I would invite reference to pages 3 6 of the

enclosed staff list. The Class II officer,
Mr. Gelling, is now on leave, the two Class III
officers are Mr. Lang and Mr. Angus, and in addition
to the probationer, Mr. Witchell, whose name
appears in the Staff List, two other recently
appointed probationers Messrs. Payne and Whitley
are also employed. One of these assists with the
clerical work in connection with matters referred to
Exccutive Council, and the other in the Confidential
Registry. There is thus an excess of two over the
establishment given in Appendix I of the Estimates,
there being a corresponding reduction of one in the
probationers
