Sub-head 73. Children's Playground at Tsim Sha Tsui $30,000.-To lay out as a child- ren's playground an area at lw junction of Chatham and Salisbury Roads, This is a very desirable work and has been asked for by the Kowloon Re- sidents Association.

74. Temporary Latrine at Police Training School $1,500.-Considered essen- tial by the Hon. C.S.P. in view of the numbers of occupants of the pre-
mises.
75. Public Latrine and Bath House, Argyle Street, Mong Kok, $12,000.—To provide public latrine and bathing accommodation in this rapidly growing district. This is considered very desirable by the Sanitary Department.
GENERAL WORKS.
76. Roads $80,000.-The vote has been increased to provide for works such as macadam kerbs and channels for roads and paving footpaths which are essential in order to keep pace with the laying out of new areas.
77. Drainage (a) Training Nullahs $1,000-To provide for areas in course of
development, drains & trenches.

78. (b) Miscellaneous Drainage Works $75,000—To provide for areas
course of development. It has been necessary to increase this vote in view of the fact that development is now making more rapid progress. Stormwater drains and sewers extension.
79. Miscellaneous $10,000. To provide for miscellaneous works such as small latrines, temporary maracts, alterations to buildings leased by Gov- ernment, electrical fittings not otherwise provided for the fixing of posts to mark boundaries and the filling in of holes (breeding mosquitoes) on un- developed lots, and many small items asked for by various Departments from time to time.
80. Water Works $8,000.-To provide for areas in course of development. In view of the progress being made in certain areas of this district it becomes essential that last year's vote should be increased to provide addi- tional street fountains and Pedestal Ilydrunts etc.
81. Port Works $2,000.-To provide for such small works as soundings and borings for foundations connected with Port Development as may be found to be essential.
COMMUNICATIONS.
82. Waterloo Road Extension to Boundary 100 feet wide $10,000.—This will enable the road to be opened to trafic, proper foundations being laid for heavy and fast moving vehicles over a width of 40 feet.
83. To Kwa Wan Road and Site Formation $12,000.-Further construction of To Kwa Wan Road and to form sites for exchanges of land by filling in low lying (malarial) areas near San Shan. This work is in hand and should be pressed to a finish. It was hoped to complete this in 1928 but this has proved to be impossible. It is anticipated that it will be com- pleted in 1929.
84. Argyle Street Extension to Waterloo Road 60 ft. wide $22,000.—This vote provides for the extension of Argyle Street from a point east of the Rail- way to the junction with Waterloo Road. The work is in progress, and it was hoped that it would be finished in 1928 but this has proved to be impossible. It is anticipated that the work will be completed in 1929,

Sub-head 85. Improving existing main roads for motor traffic :-Portion of Salisbury and Nathan Roads $50,000. T is vote is intended to provide the necessary strengthening of these important roads to meet the requirements of heavy and fast moving traffic.

86. Chatham Road Extension $50,000.-This vote is necessary in order to press on with the construction of this very desirable main arterial thoroughfare.
87. Forming road in Boundary Street by corering of nullah west of No. 8 Railway Bridge $15,000. To provide satisfactory access to this rapidly developing area. This is a very essential work.
DRAINAGE.
88. Extension at Tong Mi of South west drain from old Tai Po Road to Kow- loon Tong Village area $15,000.—This essential with a view to the pre- vention of malaria. It has long been asked for by the Sanitary Depart-
ment.
MISCELLANEOUS.
89 Chinese Cemeteries Laying out new areas $10,000.-This is in the nature of a recurrent vote. As the population increases it is necessary to break new ground for interments (although every effort is made to economize ground by periodic exhumations).
90. Renewing electrical wiring to Government Buildings $4,200.-In many cases the original wiring has perished and re-wiring has become necessary, not only for economy, but for safety.
91. Upkeep of Government sites $5,000.-In many cases where lots are left partly formed by undertaking protection works the Public Works Depart- ment not only saves the site but prevents silt being washed down into nullahs.
92. Filling in and draining land West of Yaumati Railway Station and North of Argyle Street $2,000.-This is very desirable with a view to the prevention of malaria and will provide valuable building sites.
93. Laying a telephone cable between Kowloon Railway Station and the Test Hut beyond Chatham Road Railway Bridge $8,000.-This is necessary to meet the requirements of normal expansion of telephones to Government buildings and particularly for fire and police communications.
WATER WORKS.
94. Distributing Water Mains $15,000. This work is necessary on account of the new water mains required due to the expansion of the Kowloon District. The vote is increased by fifty per cent in order to keep pace with development.
PORT WORKS.
95. Police Pier Kowloon $1,000.---This vote. provides for payment of reten-
tion money.
The work will be completed in 1928.
96. Ferry Piers at Mong Kok Tsui, Sham Shui Po, etc, $150,000. The pre- sent piers have been found to be unsuitable for the traffic which they have to carry and it is considered essential that new piers should be construct- ed. It is estimated that $150,000 will be expended on these two piers during 1929.
