Honourable Director of Public Works,
Hong Kong.
I have to report having visited Canton with regard to establishing short wave 7/T communication between Hong
Kong and Canton. At present the Canton Government have a
long wave transmitter working to Hong Kong and other places
and handling both Government and commercial traffic: the
Government traffic has of course priority, and is of such
extent as to leave little time for commercial working.
2. To improve matters the Canton Government have
installed a short wave transmitter along side the long wave
transmitter, but owing to the station being both a receiving
and a transmitting station, transmission and reception cannot
take place simultaneously on the two sets and therefore the
improvement effected is of little benefit.
3. What should be done to effect an immediate
improvement is to place the short wave transmitter in a
separate building, right away from the Bund Station, and use this set entirely for commercial work with Hong Kong. This was appreciated by Mr. Fu, and I understood was being arranged for. As soon as it is accomplished, prices should be reduced and good results should be obtained. This arrangement is suggested as a temporary expedient pending the re-arrangement of plant as suggested below.
4. Permanent re-arrangement of plant. There are three
/T stations, viz:-
