Deputy Registrar namely, £6.0 - £25 - £800, would be

an appropriate salary for this new appointment: but if

a suitable officer is not obtainable at this rate we

suggest that the Secretary of State should be

requested to advise as to the rate of salary sufficient

to attract candidates with the qualifications required.

This proposal would involve no additional cost

but would in fact effect a seving as it has in any case already been decided to appoint a second Deputy

Registrar; while the salary of an officer of the

Senior Clerical and Accounting Staff, otherwise

necessary, will not under this arrangement be required.

SECTION III.

POLICE

DEPARTMENT.

1. The Captain Superintendent of Police has

recommended the appointment of an officer of the

Senior Clerical and Accounting Staff, Class.3, and

of two clerks of Class 6 of the Junior Clerical Staff.

The first named officer is intended to act as Junior

Assistant Accountant and Store Supervisor, and the two Clerks will relieve the Store-keepers of a large amount of clerical work which they now have to perform, thus setting them free for the proper supervision of the issue and receipt of stores. We consider that a good case has been made out for these ad itional posts and we recommend that suitable officers be appointed as soon as possible. We would emphasise the importance of insisting that the staff provided for accounting and store-keeping shall be employed continuously on that work and shall

not be diverted for other purposes.
