In the afternoon Mr. Chu took me for a tour
of the city, and then entertained me to tea at a
celebrated restaurant in the country. During the
drive I was able to see for my self the immense and
deplorable damage done to the city during the
Communist outbreak of De cember last. It was more
extensive than I had imagined, and I was told that 1,500
large and important buildings had been burnt, and
that the losses might run to as much as 60 million
dollars. The present authorities' request for financial
assistance is therefore founded on the very pressing
and evident necessity for Government aid in the work
of reconstruction.
