In reply to your letter of 19th ultimo

(A/474c) the amounts of this Bank's Notes in circulation

on 31st December 1927, according to Returns in our

possession were:-

Hongkong

Penang.

Singapore

$17,036.370.

$39,900.

$42,580.

As you are aware the whole of our Note Issue

is secured by the deposit of Securities with the Bank of

England in the name of The Permanent Under Secretary of

State for the Colonies and the Crown Agents for the time

being, which on 31st December 1927 were valued at

£1,492,075.

In addition the amount of coin held in

Hongkong was $5,800,000 which is kept in a separate

Treasury the keys of which are held by the Government.
