and have received in exchange

2445,000 4% Treasury Bonds 1931-33.

the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, I have the honour to enclose certificates by the Colonial Treasurer showing the amounts deposited as security against the ordinary and excess is:ues on 31st May and 30th June, 1928,

respectively.

As it was clear that security deposited by

the Bank was considerably more than sufficient to cover the notes in circulation, at the instance of the Bank I requested the Consul-General, Shanghai, on 2nd June, to release 2 million silver dollars then held in his custody against note

issue.

3.

As stated in my telegram to you of 4th July, I also at the request of the Bank authorised the Colonial Secretary, Straits Settlements, to release a sum of $1,850,000, 5% War Loan Bonds similarly held by him. Subsequently the Bank explained that the correct amount of
