RECEIVED 31 AUG 1928

COL.OFFICE

30th August, 1928.

Sir,

I am directed by the Board of Trade to

19/acknowledge the receipt of Mr. Ellis's letter

19/0

52801/28 of August 21st on the subject of the

proposed amendment of the Hongkong and Shanghai

Bank Ordinances.

The Board observe that in the letter from

Messrs. Johnson, Stokes and Master of June 8th

it is now agreed that Clause 5(1) of the draft

Ordinance should read: -

"The objects of the Bank shall be the

carrying on of the business of banking and, as ancillary thereto, the other businesses and objects set forth and contained in regulation No. 3 of the regulations.

In view of the restrictive effect of the words

"as ancillary there to", now added, they do not

thereto",

propose to insist on the elimination of Regulation

3(4).

The Under Secretary of State,

Colonial Office,

London, S.W.1.
