I have the honour to refer to my confidential
despatch of the 11th of March, 1927, on the subject of the
pensions of officers of the Hong Kong Government.
As I stated in my previous despatch the
inadequacy of the pensions at present obtainable was urged upon my notice by senior members of the service, and the necessity for an early amelioration of the conditions governing the grant of pensions was unanimously admitted by
the members of the Executive Council and of the Finance
Committee of the Legislative Council. It is a source of
great disappointment to the service generally that I have not as yet been able to give any indication of your attitude to the proposals or any assurance that the requests made are receiving sympathetic consideration.
Much time was taken locally in examining into
the merits of the case, and in considering various alternative methods of removing hardships before I felt myself in a position to put definite proposals before you. I realise that such proposals require careful examination in the Colonial Office; but as almost a year has now elapsed
