You joined the Supreme Court Staff as clerk

and Usher on 9th January, 1912, and became Second Bailfff

on 26th September, 1916?

Yes.

On 23rd January, 1921, you became Acting First

Bailiff. For how long did you hold that appointment?

For about nine months during the absence of

Mr. Hill on long leave.

What, briefly, are the duties of the Second

Bailiff? Do you have anything to do with money or account-

s? Serving writs and process generally. I have

nothing to do with accounts. The only money we should touch would be our own expenses and money paid by persons arrested for this we give a receipt on the back of the

copy warrant.

We enter up writs, distraints and execu-

tions if we happen to be in at the time of issue.

We have nothing to do with any accounts for any

money received in the Registry. Filling records is the

duty of the Clerk and Usher, but he's in Court all day so

we give a hand.

Who instructed you in your duties? Were any

written orders given?

No one.

I looked around and saw what had to

be done. In 1912 each member of the staff, at the

request of Mr. Melbourne, gave a detailed list of his

duties. These were never issued as orders. I took dir-

ections from the First Bailiff as to anything that.

wanted doing.

What do you understand to be the duties of the

First Bailiff with regard to distraints and executions,

and in particular:-
