Piracy of S.S. "Høin jah"

In continuation of my report dated the 17th April, 1928, I beg to state that the amount of silk looted is now

given as 17 cases value $12,000 (approx).

The leader of the pirates was aged about 25 years, short and thin build, hair cut short, thin face, dressed in thin woollen clothing, and was of refined appearance and well dressed in Chinese clothing. He spoke Swator and Cantonese

dialects.

The names and particulars of the five Chinese males

kidnapped are as follows:-

1.

LO SHUK LEUNG, 48, Chinese medicine doctor of Kiang Sze

Province.

2. LAU YEE KA, 40.

3. CHOI YEUNG CHAN, 30,

Travelling inspector, China Merchants

Steamship Company, of Kwai Chau.

Ditto.

4. LI CHI HO, 41,

A Chinese male of Sam Shui.

5. Unknown.

A Chinese male who boarded the ship

at Shanghai.

All the passengers bought their tickets at Shanghai, no money main was collected on board. The pirates gained admission to the

deck when a quartermaster was being admitted to the deck after

having been forward to sound bells at 07.00 hours. One of

the pirates followed the quartermaster up the ladder leading

to the main deck and when the iron gate had been unlocked, he

pushed him forward and seized the sailor who was on duty at

the gate and dragged him down to the well-deck, and then the

other pirates swarmed the main deck and took charge. The
