repeated to Pekin Telegram No. 17. Steamship Tean Butterfield

and Swike coasting vessel was seized by pirates in

Hoihow harbour at 4 a.m. May 27th and taken to Bias Bay

yesterday. One pirate accidentally killed by Pirates on

board one Chinese passenger either thrown by pirates or fell

over high cliff and killed after landing at Bias Bay. H.M.S.

Somme & Customs cruiser both closed ship while pirates were

landing at Bias Bay and enabled chief and second officer both

British and some passengers who were being taken, away by

pirates to escape. Landing parties followed pirates several

miles but pirates scattered and escaped. Loot partly recovered

loss estimated at 10,000 dollars Tean returned to harbour

undamaged.

I am pressing through Consul General for action^authoritie

offering full co-operation and am consulting Minister at

Peking as to possibilities of further action if Canton takes

no satisfactory steps.
