I considered that the Commander of the Customs

Cruiser was very prompt in his action, and but for the

cooperation of his landing party, it is probable that

the pirates would have been able to retain three of

their prisoners.

According to the statements of the Captain and

Second Officer of the TEAN, the pirates intended taking

the ship to Fan-lo-kong, and were dismayed at the dis-

covery of H.M.S.Somme, their disembarkation being very

rapid. It is regrettable that the TEAN was close to the

shore at the time, otherwise I should have been able to

cut off their retreat in the boats. I considered that

my position off Bate Island was a suitable one, as in e

clear weather the eastern, central and western entrances

to Bias Bay are visible, except that the western side

of the central entrance is obscured by Bate Island.

All times are Zone -8: for geographical refer-

ences, see Chart No.3002, Bias Bay.

Signals made and received during the proceedings

are attached separately.

Copy to

Captain (D) 8,

H.M.S.Bruce.

(Sd.) illegible.

Lieutenant-Commander.
