With reference to my telegram No. 94
of the 3rd October I have the honour to enclose
an extract from the Hongkong Daily Press giving
a detailed account of the piracy of the British
steamer "Anking".

This vessel belonging to the China
Navigation Company Limited (Messrs. Butterfield
and Swire), left Singapore on September 23rd for
Hoihow, Swatow, Amoy and Hongkong. The pirates
embarked as passengers, possibly at Amoy on the
previous downward trip and reembarked at Singapore.
I have no definite proof of this and I have so far
seen no official police report from Hongkong on the case,
but the supposition is likely in view of the warning,
referred to later, that a pirate gang had proceeded to
Amoy with the intention of capturing a ship. The
