kept well away from and past Biss Bay until Chilang Light was

sighted and then, turning back along the coast, skirted Honghai

Bay until approaching Ross Head, near where a landing was made.

This was a new manoeuvre and evidently for the purpose of

avoiding any patrol ship, which in any case would have had mich

difficulty in picking up "Anking" without lights, in the dark.

In consequence of this piracy, Hansfields at our request

have arranged for a military guard to travel on "Anhui " whi oh

left Singapore on 2nd October and we have asked them to do the

same for following sailings. The whole question of military

guards is the subject of a separate letter.

In accordance with your telegram we are formulating a

claim on the Chinese Authorities and have already approached

Kr. Brenan in regard to it.

Yours faithfully,

We have omitted to state that we first heard of the

piracy through a wireless massage despatched from

the "Anking" at 3.45 a.m. and telephoned from the

radio office at 4.15 a.m. on 29th September, and we

awaited the vessel's arrival here before telegraph-

ing you in the afternoon of that day.
