4. I have kept the Commodore at Hongkong informed of the

measures taken by the Chinese so far as it has been possible

to ascertain what these are, and I am waiting to hear the

result. Admiral Chan Chak informed me at the Government

reception in Canton on October 10th that he had just heard

that some of the "Anking" pirates had been captured, but I

have not yet received any confirmation of this news from

Hongkong.
