SANITARY INSPECTORS. (Second Grade) (2) required by the

Government of Hong Kong for three years' service with

possible extension. Salary £220-10-£300 a year, payable

locally in dollars at the Government rate of exchange,

at present fixed at 2/- to the dollar. In addition a strictly temporary exchange allowance is at present paid amounting to 20% of salary, thus at the present time the annual salary in dollars will be about $2640 a year.

The current rate of exchange being about 2/4d. to the dollar, the sterling equivalent of $2640 is accordingly

about 2308 a year. No income tax is payable.

Free

quarters and passages. Candidates, aged 23 - 35, umarried, should have a knowledge of the building trade, preferably as plumber or carpenter, and should possess

a certificate either as Inspector of Nuisances or as

Sanitary Inspector. Apply at once by letter, stating age

Candidates aged 23 to 35 must have served as apprentices or improvers in plumbing or carpentry with firms of good standing; should also have a diploma in sanitation from the Royal Sanitary Institute of England or some other Institute whose diplomas are recognised as certifying the fitness of the holder to fill a post as Inspector of Nuisances under any local Sanitary Authority in England or Scotland. They should further have a certificate in advanced Building Construction from the City and Guilds or any other similar Institution of equal standing. A bonus increment on the initial salary of the appointment of £10 for each of the above certificates held by the person selected will be payable on appointment. I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of

your letter of the 15th December, No.30256/1927 regarding the

PE 23126 complaints made by two Sanitary Inspectors (Mr. A.W.Charity

and Mr. J. Hughes) as to the information they received at this

office when interviewed in connection with their posts.

2. We have no hesitation in stating that when these

two gentlemen were interviewed, the nature of the appointments

was not misrepresented to them, and that we gave them no

assurance that they would receive rapid promotion.

I may add that no information was given to them

here as to the necessity of acquiring a knowledge of the local

language as we were unaware that this necessity existed.

If

the Government of Hong Kong wishes such information to be given

to candidates, it should be stated in the papers of particulars

regarding vacant posts sent from the Colony, as is done by the

Governments of the Federated Malay States and Ceylon.
