My dear Selby,

27th January 1928.

I enclose a copy of a letter addressed to "r. Ormsby-

Gore by r. Maxton. It is understood from a confidential source

that a letter on a kindred subject has been or will be addressed

by Miss Ellen Wilkinson to sir Austen Chamberlain. A third

letter in the series from Yr. Saklatvala was addressed to the

First Lord of the Admiralty, and I have received, as you will

probably have done, through Fry, a copy of the answer which Mr.

Fridgeman sent to Mr. Saklatvala.

Wr. "axton's letter raises questions of policy rather

than questions of fact, and it is for consideration whether any

reply should be sent to him other than one suggesting that he

should raise questions of this sort in the ordinary way when

Parliament meets, rather than by correspondence with the

Secretary of State. The course which we adopt by way of reply

will be determined by the course which Sir Austen adopts in

W. Selby, 584., CB, CVO.
