153.
Sir,
27th June, 1928.
25
I have the honour to forward for
your information copies of correspondence noted
Telegram of 22.6.28 from Secretary of
State.
Letter of 26.6.28 from the Great Northern Telegraph Co. and the Eastern Extension Telegraph Co.
in the margin: and to inform
you that consequently this
Government is prepared to
accept the nomination by the Canton Government
of Mr. Kong Siu-lui () to the post of
Superintendent of the Chinese Telegraph
Administration in Hong Kong. I shall be glad,
therefore, if you will be good enough to convey
this information to the Canton Government.
In accepting this nomination however
this Government does not recede from its position
that the continuance of the Chinese Telegraph
Office under a Chinese official in Hong Kong is
an unsatisfactory arrangement which this
Government considers should not be perpetuated.
I have the honour to be,
Sir,
Your most obedient servant,
(sa.) W. T. Southorn.
Officer Administering the Government.
His Britannic Majesty's Consul-General,
CANTON.
