My dear Grindle

Thank you for your letter No.52711/28 of the

17th ultimo regarding Lieutenant Commander Faure's

memorandum on piracy in South China. I have been

away on leave, and your letter has been await ing my

return.

In view of the changes that have taken place in

the character of the Canton régime, in the relations

between Hongkong and Canton, and in Canton's attitude

towards the piracy question, I agree with your proposal

to drop the whole discussion, and accordingly we shall

not reply officially to Colonial Office letter No.

52711/28 of January 31st.
