receipt of your Conf. despatch of the

1st of May on the subject of the

protection of Chinese British subjects

in China, and to inform you that since

the date of my Conf. despatch of the

5th of March, negotiations with local

Chinese authorities have taken a new

turn.

As you will be aware from my

Conf. despatch of the 26th of June

H.M. Consul General at Canton has

succeeded in arranging with the Canton

Govt. for the issue by the latter of

denationalisation certificates to

Chinese British subjects wishing to

maintain their British nationality in

China. I have been able to discuss
