Enclo. No. 1.

work is being carried out, by request, in our shops at reasonably remunerative rates and with the rent of our engines absorbs the Chinese Section's share of the traffic receipts taken at our terminus.

With a view, however, to being in a position

to place orders for new engines of the type required as soon as funds become available, the Chinese Section has requested that tenders may be invited in England forthwith at its expense. 1 accordingly enclose a specification together with an outline drawing for 4-6-0 Locomotives and would request that the Crown Agents may be referred to their letter 646

Enclo. No. 261/10 of 5th December, 1924, (copy enclosed) and asked to

obtain separate tenders for the building of one, two, and three engines. Delivery in the latter cases may be consecu- tive with a reasonable time limit.

4.

As stated above the Chinese Section undertakes to refund to this Government all charges in connection with these tenders but it is presumed that the sum of £20. 18. 9 debited to this Colony in Crown Agents' account #261/10 of 27th February, 1925, will be deducted from any charges made for the preparation of drawings and specifications.

5.

When the tenders have been received arrangements for the eventual purchase of the engines by the Chinese Section will be submitted for your approval.

I have the honour to be,

1

Sir,

Your most obedient, humble servant,

M.D. Sou Shon.

Officer Administering the Government.
