In confirmation of my telegram No.75
of the 2nd September, I have the honour to enclose
a copy of the semi official letter which I have
received from Mr. Wai Yuk, the Secretary in charge of the Canton Foreign Office, on the subject of the Chinese telegraph Office in Hong Kong.

On the receipt of your telegram No.394
of the 29th July, I called on Mr. Hu Chun-lin and
Mr. Wai Yuk at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs
and informed them that if the Canton Government
would ask for the removal of the telegraph Office
to Chinese territory, the request would be com-
plied with, and it would be handed over to their control. Kr. Hu admitted that he had previously concurred in this suggestion, as reported in my
despatch No.98 of the 10th June, but said that
he subsequently consulted with the members of
the Government, who had objected that if the
