MEMORANDUM REGARDING THE USUAL TERMS OF APPOINTMENT
AND SERVICE OF ASSISTANT MASTERS IN THE HONG
KONG EDUCATION DEPARTMENT.
Qualifications.
Duties.
Emoluments.
Education at a Public School, good Grammar School or similar Institution, and a Degree or good record at a British University. It is an advantage to a candidate to have had Teaching Experience or to possess a recognised Diploma in Education.
It is desirable that Candidates should be unmarried, and, if appointed, they would be well advised not to marry during their first tour of service unless possessed of private means.
To teach ordinary form subjects (including Mathematios). Some masters are required to teach Chemistry and Physics up to London Matriculation Standard. The pupils are Chinese except at one British and one Indian School.
Assistant Masters are appointed on a three years' agreement on a salary of $400 for the 1st, £420 for the 2nd, and £440 for the 3rd year. The currency of Hong Kong is based on the silver dollar. For purposes of local payment salaries fixed in sterling are converted into dollars at a rate fixed by the Gove rnment • The rate is at present 2/- = $1, but is
liable to alteration.
A strictly temporary allowance is also granted at present, based on the average exchange value of the dollar with sterling. Thi allowance is on the following scale:-

A monthly deduction of 4 is made as c contribu- tion towards Widows' and Orphans' Pensions.
