Surveyors are appointed on a three years' agree- ment on a salary of £400 for the 1st, £420 for the 2nd and £440 for the 3rd year. The currency of Hong Kong is based on the silver dollar. For purposes of local payment salaries fixed in sterling are converted into dollars at a rate fixed by the Government. The rate

is at present 2/- = $1, but is liable to alteration.

A strictly temporary allowance is also granted at present, based on the average exchange value of the

dollar with sterling.

The current rate of exchange in Hong Kong can

be found in the chief daily papers.

A monthly deduction of 4% is made as a contri- bution towards Widows' and Orphans' Pensions.

A Surveyor whose services during his initial three years' agreement have been completely satis- factory will, subject to the exigencies of the Service

and to a certificate of medical fitness, on the ex-

piration of that period be placed on the permanent and pensionable establishment, his service under agree-

ment being reckoned as continuous for leave and

pension.
