5. I may add that the crew of the s.s. "Kinshan"
owned by the Hong Kong, Canton and Macao Steamboat
Company went on strike at Canton today and that the
vessel was brought to Hong Kong by a naval crew dis-
guised as passengers. Mr. Brenan has telegraphed to
me that, if this strike spreads to other vessels as
is likely, it will be necessary to assure communica-
tion between Shameen and Hong Kong by vessels under
naval protection as during the boycott. He is seeing
the Canton authorities and will impress upon them the
gravity of the situation. I have no doubt that the
extremist agitators will do their best to extend this
strike as widely as possible and, if they can, turn
it into a general strike.
