With reference to your letter (30082/27) of the
22nd ultimo, enclosing a copy of a despatch from the
Governor of Hong Kong regarding two enquiries which
have been received from the French Consul in that
Colony concerning the legal status of British subjects
of Chinese race, I am directed by Secretary Sir Austen
Chamberlain to inform you that he would prefer to learn-
the views of the Home Office in regard to the draft
replies to the French Consul's enquiries drawn up by the
Attorney-General of Hong Kong before making any
observations on the subject.
